Phillies try to halt skid; Cardinals look to extend streak
The Philadelphia Phillies will try to stop a short losing skid while the St. Louis Cardinals will be trying to extend a winning streak when the teams clash in the second game of a three-game set Tuesday at Busch Stadium.
The Phillies (48-44 SU), are 5-5 SU in the past 10 games and are in danger of sliding out of the playoff race in the NL East division, as they are now in third place, six games behind the leading Atlanta Braves.
The Cardinals (52-41 SU) are in first in the NL Central, just a half-game ahead of the Cincinnati Reds.
The Cardinals are a -178 moneyline favorite for tonight’s tilt, and the over/under is 8 in Baseball Odds at Legends.
Albert Pujols went 2-for-4 with a two-run homer and three runs batted in to lead the Cardinals past the Phillies 8-4 on Monday night. St. Louis cashed as -125 home favorites and the score went over the 9-run total.
Jon Jay was 2-for-3 with an RBI for the Cardinals, as Brad Hawksworth allowed four runs over six innings to get the win for St. Louis. Shane Victorino knocked in two runs for Philadelphia, while losing pitcher Kyle Kendrick was rocked for seven runs over five innings for the Phillies.
Philadelphia will start lefty Jamie Moyer, who is 9-9 with a 4.88 ERA this season. St. Louis will counter with ace righthander Chris Carpenter, who is 10-3 with a 3.16 ERA.
