British Open Championship opens with a few surprises

John Daly surprised many when he shot a six-under par 66 to come away from the opening round of the 139th British Open Championship with a share of second place Thursday.

But whether the big guy can maintain his play is debatable – especially with the way Northern Ireland’s Rory McIlory played.

McIlory, the No. 9-ranked player in the world, shot a nine-under 63 in the opening round to take the lead, and in doing so became just the second golfer to post the score in a major championship at St. Andrews.

Defending Open champ Stewart Cink shot a two-under 70 with three birdies and a bogey, while the legendary Tom Watson, who Cink beat in a playoff last year at Turnberry, shot a one-over 73.

Daly, the 1995 Open champion at St. Andrews, had a stellar opening round and shared second place with Andrew Coltart.

World No. 1 Tiger Woods, meanwhile, looked solid with a five-under 67. He finished the first round in fourth, along with four other golfers: Marcel Siem, Nick Watney, Lucas Glover and Sean O’Hair.

The action in Fife, Scotland continues through Sunday, with coverage starting at 4 am ET on ESPN and ABC.

Woods favored at Masters Tournament

The Masters Tournament gets going Thursday at Augusta National Golf Club (4 pm ET, ESPN), with Tiger Woods in the spotlight.

The 2010 Masters marks Woodsâ€™ first tournament on the PGA Tour after five months away from the game.

Woods is a +400 favorite in PGA Betting Odds at Legends sportsbook.

World No. 3 Phil Mickelson is next at +1050 to win the Masters, while the worldâ€™s No. 8-ranked player, Ernie Els, also is at +1050.

Els has won other major tournaments, including the U.S. Open twice, but the Mastersâ€™ Green Jacket has eluded him throughout his career.

Ratings are expected to be highest for any Masters Tournament ever because of the return of the Worldâ€™s No. 1-ranked golfer.

Woods is playing his first tournament since November, when he was involved in a motor-vehicle accident near his Florida home.

That incident was followed by news that the married Woods had had ongoing extra-marital affairs. In January, Woods entered a rehab facility, where he reportedly underwent counseling for sex addiction.

Woods refused to speak with the news media until he read a prepared statement in February, followed by two television interviews in March, and a full press conference Monday at Augusta.

Woods has won four Masters championships. This will be his 16^th Master tournament.

Angel Cabrera won the 2009 Masters.

Stricker favored to win Sony Open in Hawaii

The first full-field PGA tournament of the year gets going this week with the Sony Open at the Waialae Country Club in Hawaii.

Legends sportsbook has Golf Betting Odds for the Sony Open, with Steve Stricker the favorite at +1000 odds.

The 2010 PGA Tour officially kicked off last week with the SBS Championship, which is open only to 2009 Tour winners.

Geoff Ogilvy of Australia won the SBS Championship at the Plantation course on in Kapalua, Hawaii, but will not be in the field for the Sony Open.

Other favorites this week are Zach Johnson at +1300, and Sean Oâ€™Hair at +1500.

One top golfer who will in the field in Honolulu this week is Vijay Singh, who will be competing for the first time since knee surgery in November.

Singh is at +4000 odds to win the Sony Open.

Johnson won last yearâ€™s tournament, shooting a five-under 65 on the final day to beat David Toms and Adam Scott by two strokes.

The win was Johnson’s fifth overall on the PGA Tour and kicked off what turned out to be a stellar season, as he went on to win the Texas Open and ultimately finished sixth on the final FedEx Cup points list.

This tournament has been held at Waialae since its inaugural event in 1965. Previously known as the Hawaiian Open, it became the Sony Open in Hawaii in 1999. The tournament was previously known as the Hawaiian Open from 1965-98.

The Sony Open will be broadcast on the Golf Channel will broadcast for all four rounds.

Wyndham suffers from PGA Championship hangover

The PGA Championship hangover is palpable – especially considering Tiger’s meltodown in the fourth round Sunday – but the PGA Tour marches on this week with the Wyndham Championship at the Sedgefield Country Club in Greensboro, North Carolina.

The Golf Betting field is wide open, with just two players ranked in the top 20 in the world competing this week.

Legends Golf Betting Lines have Lucas Glover as a +1500 favorite.

Glover won the U.S. Open in June, moving him up to 18^th in world professional golf rankings. After finishing a very respectable 5^th at the PGA Championship, Glover is now ranked 15^th.

The highest ranked player competing this week is No. 7 Sergio Garcia, who is at +1800 odds.

Carl Pettersson cruised to a two-stroke win over Scott McCarron at the Wyndham Championship last year.

There are four tournament winners from this season in the field as well as seven former champions competing at Sedgefield Country Club.

This is the final event before the FedEx Cup playoffs begin, so players are battling to get into the top 144 on the points list. After the four-event playoff swing is the Fall Series, where players will then battle to get into the top 125 on the money list to keep their PGA Tour cards for next season.

The event was formerly the Greater Greensboro Open, where Sam Snead won eight times in his career – the most wins for a single player at one event in PGA Tour history.

The Golf Channel will cover Thursday’s and Friday’s action before CBS takes over rounds three and four on the weekend.

Next week is the first FedEx Cup playoff event, The Barclays, where Vijay Singh won in 2008.

PGA Championship season's last major tournament

The 2009 PGA Championship – the last major tournament of the year – gets started Thursday at Hazeltine National Golf Club in Chaska, Minnesota (2 pm ET, TNT).

The par-72 course will play over 7,674 yards and is expected to draw at least 97 of the top 100-ranked pro golfers in the world.

PGA Golf Betting Odds will be available at LegendZ, with Tiger Woods expected to be a big favorite.

The world’s No. 1 golfer has rattled off two straight wins, taking the title at the Buick Open two weeks ago and the World Golf Championship at the Bridgestone Invitational on Sunday.

Often called “Glory’s Last Shot,” the PGA Championship is the last of pro golf’s four majors, which include The Masters and the U.S. and British opens.

Woods will be looking for his first major championship this year. The last time Woods didn’t win a single major in one season was 2004. He’s won six since.

In 2002, the year the PGA Championship was last played at Hazeltine, Woods fired a final-round 67 to nearly overcome a five-stroke deficit. But in the end, it was Woods’ first runner-up in a major.

Padraig Harrington is the defending champion of the PGA Championship.

This year’s PGA Championship has a total purse of $7.5 million.

Woods returns for Buick Open

The Buick Open at the Warwick Hills Golf & Country Club in Grand Blanc, Michigan is this week’s stop on the PGA Tour.

World No. 1 Tiger Woods returns to action this week. He was victorious at Warwick Hills in 2002 and 2006, and he finished second in ’03 and ’05.

At the 2008 Buick Open, Kenny Perry shot all four rounds in the 60s to collect his second win in five weeks.

Perry had set a goal of making the U.S. Ryder Cup last year and this win nearly sealed it. After his Buick win and a victory at the John Deere in 2008, Perry adjusted his goal to reach 20 career wins on the PGA Tour. Â The 48-year-old has won two more times this season and pushed his win total to 14. He also won this title in 2001.

Perry will not be on hand to defend his title as he spends time with his cancer-stricken mother.

Billy Mayfair set a PGA Tour record for best birdie-eagle streak at Warwick Hills in 2001. After going birdie-eagle, he birdied his next six holes to play an eight-hole stretch in minus-nine.

The Golf Channel will air three hours of action Thursday and Friday, then will have early coverage of the third and final rounds from 1-2:30 pm ET. CBS will broadcast three hours of play on both Saturday and Sunday.

There is a pair of events next week for the PGA Tour. The best of the best will be in Ohio for the World Golf Championships-Bridgestone Invitational, where Vijay Singh is the defending champion. The remainder of the tour will be in Nevada for the Legends Reno-Tahoe Open, where Parker McLachlin won last year.

Canadian Open next stop on PGA Tour

The British Open is over it’s now time to focus on the next stop on the PGA Tour, the Canadian Open.

The 2009 RBC Canadian Open, which opens Thursday at the Glen Abbey Golf Club in Oakville, Ontario, will be the 100^th playing of what is the third-oldest national golf tournament behind only the British and U.S. Opens.

Camilo Villegas is the favorite in Golf Betting Odds at +925, followed by Anthony Kim at +1300.

Retief Goosen and Luke Donald are at +1500, followed by Weir at +1600 in Canadian Open Betting Odds.

Defending champion Chez Reavie, who collected this first PGA Tour win last year at Glen Abbey, is way back in the Canadian Open Betting Odds at +13500.

Reavie’s win last year was largely due to his stellar play in the first two days, as he was 13-under through two rounds. He struggled through the third and fourth rounds but ended up with a three-stroke win over Billy Mayfair.

Reavie will be one of five former champions in the field this week.

Six of the top-30 players in the world will be at Glen Abbey this week. Villegas and O’Hair headline that group. O’Hair is also seventh on the PGA Tour money list and ninth in the FedEx Cup standings.

O’Hair is among eight PGA Tour players that have won this season and are in the field. Among that group is two-time U.S. Open champion Goosen, who is one of 11 major champions competing this week.

The Golf Channel will have three hours of coverage the first two days, then CBS will take over on the weekend.

The PGA Tour travels to Michigan next week for the Buick Open, where Kenny Perry won last year.

Woods a huge favorite to win British Open

The 138th British Open Championship, the third of golf’s four majors, starts Thursday at Turnberry in Ayrshire, Scotland (7 am ET, TNT).

Padraig Harrington has won the past two British Opens, and will try to become the first to win the prestigious tournament three straight years since Australia’s Peter Thomson in 1954-56.

But World No. 1 Tiger Woods is an overwhelming favorite to win his 4^th British Open.

Woods is a +200 favorite in Legendz Golf Betting Odds, followed byÂ Sergio Garcia at +2200. Harrington is further back at +3200.

At the first major of 2009, The Masters, Harrington finished a dismal 35th, then missed the cut at the U.S. Open. In his last 20 rounds between the PGA Tour and European Tour, Harrington has managed just two rounds in the 60s.

At the 2008 British Open, Harrington’s final-round 69 was good enough for a three-shot win over Ian Poulter. In 2007, Harrington needed a playoff to knock off Ryder Cup teammate Garcia.

Woods returns to the British Open after missing the championship last year. When Woods was unable to start last year due to knee surgery, he snapped a streak of 46 consecutive majors played, dating to his runaway win at the 1997 Masters.

If Woods wins this weekend , he will join four others who have accomplished the feat of four British Open wins.

The Ailsa Course at Turnberry first hosted the Open Championship in 1977.

Perry favored as top golfers skip John Deere Classic

Kenny Perry is favored to repeat as champion at this week’s John Deere Classic at TPC Deere Run in Silvis, Illinois.

With the British Open Championship next week, many of the world’s top-ranked golfers are skipping this week’s stop on the tournament.

But while Tiger Woods and other top pros prepare for the British Open – the third of pro golf’s four majors – Perry will be defending his title at the John Deere Classic.

Last year, Perry managed a one-under 70 in the final round to put him into a three-way tie for the lead with Jay Williamson and Brad Adamonis.

On the first extra hole, Perry made par and went on to capture his third win of the 2008 season. The victory solidified Perry’s position with the U.S. Ryder Cup team.

The TPC Deere Run course has proved fairly easy in the past, as just three times in tournament history has the winner not reached double figures under par.

This will be the sixth straight year the John Deere Classic has served as the final tune-up for the British Open.

TV coverage of the tournament will be shared by The Golf Channel and CBS.

Woods favored at Players Championship

The Players Championship, unofficially golf’s ’5^th Major,’ starts Thursday and – no surprise – Tiger Woods is the favorite.

The Players Championship, which will feature most of the world’s top 50-ranked golfers, is played at the Stadium Course at at TPC Sawgrass in Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla.

Woods, the world’s No. 1 golfer, is a +350 favorite to win the Players Championship at LegendZ.

World No. 2 Phil Mickelson is at +900 odds while Sean O’Hair, who won the Quail Hollow Championship last week, is at +2500.

Geoff Ogilvy is at +3000 and Sergio Garcia, who won the 2008 Players Championship, is at +3500.

At Quail Hollow, Woods took the lead on the opening day with a seven-under 65. Playing in his fifth tournament back since knee surgery, Woods entered Sunday two shots out of the lead but wasted several birdie chances and one eagle opportunity, closing with 10 straight pars for a 72, good for fourth place.

This will be his first time playing consecutive tournaments in 2009.

The Players Stadium Course will play at 7,220 yards this year.

The Players Championship offers the highest prize fund of any tournament in golf – $9.5 million, with the winner collecting $1.7 million.

The tournament starts Thursday, with live coverage on Thursday and Friday on the Golf Channel (1-7 pm ET). NBC takes over on Saturday and Sunday (2-7 pm ET).
