Penn State has been an established national power in college football for decades. Although they hit a rough spot a few years back it appears that Joe Paterno has led the team back to their winning tradition. Last season the Nittany Lions managed to win 11 of their 13 games that they took part in. The only two games that they lost were to Big Ten foes as they went 6-2 in the Big Ten last season.

The Penguins will have a tough matchup before them. The Penguins enjoyed a solid season in 2009 with a 6-5 record, but they never had to play against a team like Penn State. Last season the Penguins did not play against any teams ranked in the top 25. This season Penn State has a preseason ranking of number 19 and will be a real test for the Penguins.

Last year the Penguins managed a 4-4 record in the MVC. The MVC isn’t exactly a powerhouse conference by any means. The Penguins rarely face competition like this at their school.

The good news is that there is nothing to lose for Youngstown State. They are not expected to win this game. They will have the chance to put up a good showing or shock the world though as they take on Penn State.

College Football Betting: Western Kentucky vs. Nebraska

The Western Kentucky Hilltoppers will take on the Nebraska Cornhuskers to kick off the 2010 season on Saturday.

It is tradition for the top teams in the nation to have a few games like this in order to pad their stats on the season. By ever viewpoint it appears that Nebraska would have to have an absolute disaster occur in order for it to drop this game.

And the discrepancies between the teams are reflected in the betting line: The Cornhuskers are 37.5-point favorites in College Football Betting at Legends.

Western Kentucky simply did not have a successful team last season. They managed to lose every game they played last year. This sort of thing can be changed over time, but it is hard to get enough talent in just one year to overturn a program that loses every game.

This being said, they will have a difficult time playing against Nebraska. Nebraska is ranked 8th in the nation entering the season and they believe they are in the National Championship hunt.

Nebraska won 10 games last season. They play in the Big 12, which sports 3 great teams this year. The Villanova Wildcats will square off against the Temple Owls to start the 2010 College Football season on Friday. These two teams are coming off of great seasons and look to start things off right in 2010.

The Villanova Wildcats had a spectacular season in 2010. The Wildcats managed to win an incredible 14 games last season while only losing once. This is significant because there are tons of teams around the nation that do not even play 14 games on the season. The Wildcats managed to enter the field with confidence week in and week out last season. They hope to start things off with the same mentality in 2010.

The Temple Owls came off of a very solid season in 2010. The Owls won 9 of their 13 contests on the season. They were particularly dominant in the MAC as they went 7-1 on the season in the MAC. The big thing for the Owls in 2010 is proving that they can win games outside of their conference. While they were excellent within their conference they only managed to win 2 of their 5 games outside of the conference.

These sorts of statistics suggest that Temple may be a team that feeds on the lower level competition within their conference.

This matchup should be a good one as these teams square off. Villanova will be trying to get national attention with another big season as the Owls will try to show everyone that they can win games outside of their conference.

NFL: Colts @ Packers on ESPN

The Indianapolis Colts visit the Green Bay Packers in a nationally televised NFL exhibition game Thursday (8 pm ET, ESPN).

NFL Betting at Legends has the Packers as a 3.5-point favorite and the over/under total at 44.5.

Indianapolis and Green Bay are both 2-2 straight up and against the point spread over the past four meetings, the last coming two seasons ago when the Packers dumped the Colts 34-14, covering the spread as a 1-point home underdog.

Indianapolis is still looking for its first preseason win, as the Colts dropped their opener 37-17 to the San Francisco 49ers on Aug. 15, and then lost 34-21 against the Buffalo Bills last Thursday.

The Packers lost their preseason opener 27-24 against the visiting Cleveland Browns on Aug. 14, but then followed that up with a 27-24 win over the Seattle Seahawks last Saturday at Qwest Field.

Indianapolis was 14-2 straight up and 10-6 against the point spread in 2009. The Colts won the AFC South division title for the sixth time in the past seven years.

Green Bay was 11-5 SU and 11-4-1 ATS and finished second in the NFC North division behind the Minnesota Vikings.

NL East: Florida Marlins @ New York Mets

NL East rivals Florida Marlins and the New York Mets open a three-game set Tuesday at Citi Field (7:10 pm ET, FOX).

Florida is a -124 moneyline favorite while the over/under total is at 6.5 in MLB Betting at Legends.

New York is 4-2 SU in the past six meetings, and the total has gone over in four of the past five meetings.

Gaby Sanchez hit a solo home run as Florida lost 2-1 against the Houston Astros in its last game on Sunday. The Marlins cashed as a -120 money favorite and the score was under the over/under total of 9.

New York was also beaten 2-1 in its last game, as the Pittsburgh Pirates cashed as a +145 underdog on Sunday.

The Marlins will start ace righthander Josh Johnson, who is 11-5 this season with a 2.27 ERA. New York will counter with righthander R.A. Dickey, who is 8-5 with a 2.41 ERA.

Florida is 62-61 SU and is 10.5 games out of first place in the NL East and New York is 62-62 SU, 10 games off the pace. The Marlins are 7.5 games back in the NL Wild Card race and the Mets are eight games back.

NFL: New Orleans Saints @ New England Patriots

Drew Brees and the New Orleans Saints open their NFL exhibition schedule Thursday against Tom Brady and the New England Patriots.

New Orleans is coming off its first-ever Super Bowl win after upsetting the favored Indianapolis Colts 31-17 in Super Bowl XLIV. Conversely, New England bowed out early in last season’s NFL Playoffs, getting beat 33-14 by the Baltimore Ravens in the Wild Card round.

The Saints road to its first NFL championship included wins over the Arizona Cardinals in the divisional round and the Minnesota Vikings in the NFC Conference championship.

In the regular season, New Orleans was 13-3 SU and 8-8 ATS, and first in the NFC South division, while New England was 10-6 SU and 8-7-1 ATS, first in the AFC East division.

NFL Betting at Legends has the Patriots as a 1-point favorite and the over/under total at 35.

In recent meetings, New England is 3-2 SU and 1-4 ATS in the past five clashes. The Saints and Pats met once last season, a 38-17 New Orleans win on Nov. 30 as a 2-point home favorite. The score went under the over/under total of 57.

New Orleans was on its way to an undefeated campaign last year, winning its first 13 games, before losing to the Dallas Cowboys and then dropping its final two. The Pats wrapped up the regular season with a 34-27 loss against the Houston Texans.

NFL Preseason: Carolina Panthers at Baltimore Ravens

The Baltimore Ravens host the Carolina Panthers in the first game of the 2010 NFL preseason for both teams on Thursday (8 pm ET, ESPN).

The Ravens are 3.5-point home favorites and the over/under is 34 in NFL Betting at Legends sportsbook.

Carolina suffered a big setback last season after going 12–4 SU in 2008. The Panthers finished third in the NFC south division and out of the playoffs with an 8-8 SU and 9-7 ATS record last season.

Baltimore had a very inconsistent season, as the team started the campaign with three-straight wins but then lost its next three. That was followed by alternating wins and losses in its next six games.

The Ravens finished with a 9-7 SU and 8-7-1 ATS record, which put them second in the AFC North. In the NFL Playoffs, Baltimore beat the New England Patriots 33-14 in the Wild Card round, but lost 20-3 against the Indianapolis Colts in the divisional round.

The Panthers have dominated the Ravens head-to-head, going 3-0 SU and ATS in the past three meetings. The teams last squared off in 2006 when Carolina won 23-21, covering the spread as a 3-point road underdog. The score went over the total of 33.5.

In their last game on Jan. 3, the Panthers beat the eventual Super Bowl champion New Orleans Saints 23-10. Carolina covered as a 10-point favorite against a Saints team that was resting many starters. The score went under the total of 41.

Carolina’s next game is Saturday, Aug. 21 at home against the New York Jets. Baltimore’s next game also is Sat. Aug. 21 on the road against the Washington Redskins.

NFL Season Preview: New York Jets

The New York Jets are coming off of a season that really gave the team hope for the first time in many years. The team saw a quarterback emerge and a running game blossom. There are high hopes for the Jets entering the 2010 season.

Truth be told, Mark Sanchez did not enjoy a wonderful statistical year in 2009. He did do enough to get the job done though. Moreover, when the playoffs rolled around he stepped up his game to another level and showed what he will be able to do when called upon in years to come.

The Jets have a solid receiver core to help out Sanchez. They have two receivers that will be good tools for Sanchez in Braylon Edwards and Santonio Holmes. To be honest, neither of these players is a true number one receiver yet. Each of them has shown flashes of greatness however, and as a tandem these two players should be more than sufficient.

The running game took a hit with the loss of Thomas Jones, but the Jets are confident that Shonn Greene will be able to get the job done in his place. The Jets brought in a great veteran influence in LaDanian Tomlinson to help carry the load, and they also picked up Joe McKnight in the draft.

All in all things look good for the Jets entering into the new season. Barring injury, it appears that they will be back in the running for a playoff appearance in 2010.

The Jets open the NFL season on Monday Night Football on Sept. 13 against the Baltimore Ravens, with the Jets a 3-point favorite and the total at 36.5 in NFL Betting.

NFL Season Preview: New England Patriots

The New England Patriots put together an interesting season in 2009. The team managed to dominate teams throughout the course of the season, outscoring their opponents by 142 points over the course of the season. Despite this lopsided margin the Patriots only managed to take home 10 wins and failed overall on the road.

Generally the Patriots are pictured as a veteran team with the experience that it takes to win on the road. Despite this reputation, the team simply could not get it done in 2009. The team managed just a 2-6 record in road games during the season. This is compared to the 8-0 record at home that they achieved.

The Patriots will need to prove early that they can still win on the road if they hope to be contenders. It is obviously very important to win on the road as they will not play all of their playoff games at home come postseason time.

The Patriots need to make their move quickly because their team will not be getting any younger. The players that lead the team haven’t hit a decline yet, but it could be coming. To this point Randy Moss has consistent. He has maintained speed and agility through 13 seasons so far, but it can’t last forever. It may last through this year, but he probably doesn’t have many more seasons left as a breakaway receiver.

The New England Patriots will probably be a contender this year, but these concerns of getting older are something to watch for as the season progresses.

The Patriots open the NFL season on Sept. 12 against the Cincinnati Bengals, with the Patriots 6-point favorites and the over/under at 43 in NFL Betting.
